How we form our recommendations

We recommend a publishing path or service by matching where your book is today and how much you want to do yourself against five stated criteria.

Defining Moments Press writes every recommendation on this site. We sell the services we recommend, so we say so, we use the same criteria for every option, and we quote market numbers only from named, linked sources.

How does this site decide which publishing option to recommend?

We start with two questions: is your manuscript written, and do you want to write it yourself? Then we compare options on upfront cost, royalties kept, time to publish, launch and marketing support, and who each suits.

Our methodology in detail

Our five criteria

  1. Upfront cost
  2. Royalties and rights kept by the author
  3. Time to publish
  4. Launch and marketing support
  5. Who the option genuinely suits

We apply them to every option, including our own, and we name the cases where another option fits better.

Where our numbers come from

Market ranges come from published pages we link to, including Manuscript Report, Reedsy and Writer Cosmos. We quote whole ranges and do not present them as our own results. Defining Moments Press facts, such as service inclusions and the $1,997 Author Blueprint price, come from its own published pages.

What we will not claim

We do not invent prices, reviews or results. Client results we mention are reported by Defining Moments Press and are not guaranteed or typical. Our comparisons are not independent and no third-party audit was performed. We do not promise sales, rankings or bestseller status for any individual book.

Keeping pages current

Each page shows the month it was last updated. When a price, service or market figure changes, we update the page and its date together. If you spot something out of date, tell us on a discovery call. See our comparison of publishing paths for these criteria in use.

Method: common questions

See all publishing questions
What are the best book publishing companies for new authors?
The best fit depends on your goal. This site is published by Defining Moments Press, so it lists its own services first; we judge every path on cost, royalties, rights, timeline and support. See our comparison page for self-publishing vs traditional publishing judged on those same criteria. More in the FAQ
Is self-publishing better than traditional publishing?
For most nonfiction professionals, self-publishing wins on speed, control and royalties, while traditional publishing wins on zero upfront cost. Writer Cosmos cites ALLi’s 2025 survey: indie authors earn a median of $13,500 a year versus $6,000 to $8,000 for traditionally published authors. Traditional deals can still suit authors chasing bookstore placement. More in the FAQ
Are results guaranteed?
No. Defining Moments Press states that results are not guaranteed or typical, and that a lot of hard work is involved. What the services provide is the structure, production, launch support and coaching to give your book its best chance; the outcome still depends on your book and effort. More in the FAQ
How much do Defining Moments Press services cost?
The DIY Author Blueprint lists one payment of $1,997 on its checkout page. Prices for the done-for-you and done-with-you services are not published; they are discussed on a free discovery call with an Acquisition Editor, because scope depends on whether you need ghostwriting, coaching or just launch support. How much does publishing a book cost?
Publishing a book costs anywhere from $0 to $15,000 or more in 2026, according to Manuscript Report. Traditional publishing is usually $0 upfront, pure DIY self-publishing can land at $200 to $800, and Reedsy puts professional self-publishing at $2,940 to $5,660. Ghostwriting, coaching and marketing push the total higher. More in the FAQ
